I’ve driven through the Bakken Shale Region (of North Dakota, Montana and Alberta) quite a few times on tour as a musician, and I’ve seen the area’s dramatic change from grasslands to petro-boom towns. Desiring to quantify this, I obtained and analyzed a time series of imagery from the LandSat and Sentinel satellites, parsing drill pads via the Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index. Since the actual drill pad footprints were far too small to effectively communicate on a map, I utilized hexagon tessellations to tell the story in a more visually compelling way.
